Volunteer as a Research Assistant

Please note, we are not currently adding research assistants to our team.

Volunteer activities in the past have included literature reviews, working on stimulus development, helping with data collection, making figures, and contributing to ongoing lab discussions. In addition to interest in science, we also sometimes have volunteers who are interested in art and/or film. Volunteers generally work with graduate students, senior research assistants, and Dr. Vanderwal. If you are interested in volunteering as a research assistant in the Naturalistic Neuroimaging Lab, please email us at movielab@bcchr.ca with your CV, a brief cover letter, unofficial transcripts, and anticipated weekly availability.

Directed Studies or Honours Students

Please note, we are no longer accepting directed studies students for the 2024/2025 cycle.

If you are interested in doing a Directed Studies project or completing an Honour’s Thesis in the Naturalistic Neuroimaging Lab, please email a statement of interest, unofficial transcripts, and your CV to movielab@bcchr.ca. These positions could be for science, interdisciplinary, or art/film coursework.

Prospective Graduate Students

Please note, the lab is already overcommitted for new graduate students for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Dr. Vanderwal accepts graduate students through the Neuroscience program at UBC.

Potential graduate students should have a strong interest in psychiatric neuroimaging, particularly in a pediatric context. Experience with neuroimaging is an asset, and some prior coding experience is required. Most successful applicants have some undergraduate research experience, strong references, and a track record of working well with others.

Prospective Post Doctoral Fellows

We are actively interested in adding a neuroimaging postdoc to the team, but interested applicants would need to work with Dr. Vanderwal to first secure funding.
